Sweet Justice : Discovering Tkay Maidza

Zimbabwean-born singer and rapper Tkay Maidza has emerged in the hip hop world as an electrifying force to be reckoned with.

After her parents moved to Australia to pursue work in the mining industry, the family found a home in the city of Adelaide, where Maidza enjoyed simple childhood pastimes such as eating ice cream and reading on the beach. But by 17-years-old she was already making a name for herself on the Australian music scene.

Before becoming a full-time musician, Maidza graduated from St. Michael’s College at the age of 16, and then studied architecture at the University of South Australia. Taking on music as a career was no small feat for Maidza. She dropped out of school and even gave up a promising tennis career when her music started to take off. She then took part in an artist development program called Northern Sound System, laying the foundation for her successful career. Maidza has since been nominated for various accolades, including “Best New International Act” at the BET Awards.

Tkay, her eponymous debut album, was released in 2017, after dropping various singles over the years. It displayed bold and individualistic diversity, and her music has since evolved into a thrilling fusion of smooth R&B and fiery rap, with every track being distinctive on its own. The transition from dance to R&B and rap was not an easy decision, but was a fulfilling one for Maidza.

“You could say I was scared,  Maidza tells Loud and Quiet. “If I was doing pop music, then people who liked rap didn’t have to judge me for being this hybrid thing. But then that’s actually just who I am, and I need to embrace it. And that’s a lesson I’ve learnt over time. But I think when I was making the album Tkay, I was like, it’s a pop thing and that’s so easy and I can just do whatever I want really quickly, but I don’t think that’s what I was meant to do. I think sometimes taking the easy road isn’t the right thing.”

My favorite work from Maidza is her latest album, Sweet Justice (2023). It displays perfect balance in its blend of flowy R&B sounds with hardcore rap. This musical whiplash makes the album playful and versatile and, although it speaks to the concept of karma, it also reflects themes of female confidence and empowerment.

Maidza’s experience as an African-Australian is a unique story that undoubtedly contributes to her creativity and ambition. Having experienced racism during her formative years, Maidza was forced to grow a tough skin and focus on her own success despite the unfair judgment she endured. This strength in character is recognizable in her music, with many tracks exuding a certain self-assurance. The unique blend of genres make her music so enticing and demonstrate true talent. That authenticity is what initially attracted me to her music, but I was hooked by all the great tunes.

Whether it is chest-thumping rap or dreamy R&B, Maidza offers something for every listener. Hear more on Denver’s urban alternative station, 104.7 FM THE DROP.
