Common’s Generational Connection to Colorado
As excitement builds for 104.7 THE DROP’s 4th Annual Block Party, we’re thrilled to announce Common as this year’s headliner. With his thought-provoking albums and unwavering commitment to social change, Common is not just a rapper but a beacon of inspiration.
Common (born Lonnie Rashid Lynn) has more than just beats, rhymes and award winning on screen performances in his bag – he’s got a unique family history that’s tied up with the Mile High City.
Lonnie Lynn, Sr., commonly known as “Pops,” was a notable figure in the early years of the American Basketball Association (ABA). He played for the Denver Rockets during the 1967-1968 season. Lynn was a forward known for his athleticism and defensive prowess. While his statistical impact might not have been staggering, his presence on the court brought stability and leadership to the Rockets team. Lynn’s career with the Denver Rockets was brief, but he left a lasting impression on his teammates and in the Denver community.
Common often pays homage to his father in his music, celebrating his influence on his life and career. Despite Lonnie Sr.’s brief stint with the Denver Rockets in the ABA, his impact transcended the court, shaping the values and aspirations of his son. Through their shared love for basketball and a deep bond rooted in familial support, Lonnie Sr. instilled in Common the resilience and determination that have defined both their legacies.
