Haitian-Canadian DJ & super producer KAYTRANADA returns with his first solo LP in nearly 5 years, TIMELESS. After releasing his collaborative album KAYTRAMINÉ with Seattle rapper Aminé last year, KAYTRANADA had been teasing that he had a new project in the works. The creative evolution of KAYTRANADA is one to watch: the artist made his album debut only 8 years ago with 99.9%. Since then, he he’s mastered his iconic “KAYTRANADA anthem” sound, while still leaving room for exploration.
TIMELESS is a 21-track album filled with his characteristic rhythmic swing. Almost every track features work by some of the most prolific artists in his circle. From vocals by Charlotte Day Wilson to basslines by Thundercat, these collaborators express the best in themselves over these dance-focused beats layered with KAYTRANADA’s signature dreamy synths. The album credits include Childish Gambino, Anderson .Paak, PinkPantheress, Tinashe, Mariah The Scientist, SiR, Channel Tres, Ravyn Lanae, Don Toliver, Lou Phelps, Durand Bernarr and more.
This album is meant to be played in the club, it is meant to be enjoyed with friends, it is meant to make you put your phone away and actually dance. While listening through the album, you realize that there is not a sound or style that he isn’t comfortable exploring, from soulful chord progressions with bouncy basslines to dancehall and breakbeat percussion. “Drip Sweat (feat. Channel Tres)” was released as a single earlier this week and “Lover/Friend (feat. Rochelle Jordan)” was introduced earlier in November.
TIMELESS is a perfect name for this album, considering the way he curates nostalgic samples from funk and disco records and spins them with a modern twist to stand the test of time.
