Heritage, Hip-Hop, and Activism : Jon Rubio

Jon Rubio is a rising force in Denver’s music scene, blending traditional Mexican influences with hip-hop to create a sound that’s truly his own. Born into a musical family, Jon’s journey to becoming an artist has been far from ordinary. From playing drums in church bands to experimenting with underground beats at local libraries, his path has shaped him into an artist who can do it all. Today, Jon’s music embodies both rhythm and storytelling, reflecting his deep connection to his roots and his passion for hip-hop culture.

Growing up surrounded by music, Jon was immersed in different styles and sounds from an early age. His father, a multi-instrumentalist, introduced him to instruments like the drums and guitar, sparking a lifelong love of rhythm. Over time, Jon’s passion for music evolved into something more—hip-hop gave him the power to not only control beats but also to tell stories through lyrics. His unique blend of percussion skills and lyrical talent has allowed him to carve out a space in Denver’s underground rap scene, where he continues to perform solo and with his band, Mocochetes, blending music with activism and cultural expression.
